Electronic Mosquito Solutions at the Cottage

As mosquitoes and blackflies multiply throughout the spring and summer, it's worth determining how effective electronic devices can be at reducing their presence.  Some devices are simply small swatter, like to a tennis racket, equipped with a battery powered trigger to electrocute bugs.
Largely recreational but convenient, these can be handy on the deck, porch, or dock where you'll get to test your hand-eye coordination as well!

Other stationary fixtures are less discretionary about the bugs they electrocute. They use lights to attract flying insects and zap any that wander within range.  Outdoor models have a bad reputation for killing non-biting insects indiscriminately however.
If you're trying to deal with invasive Gypsy moths, this may yet be your ideal solution.

From personal experience, indoor models are brilliant for insect control if you and your pet can tolerate the surprising zap sound and resulting cleanup. Typically there is a tray at the bottom for ashtray-like emptying.
No-See-Ums or biting midges are notoriously difficult to swat and will get through window screens or around frames. Thankfully they seem to be particularly attracted to the blue light.  Initially you may actually think the device is malfunctioning and zapping unnecessarily, until you look more closely and see the tiny bodies. ​Stinky Asian Lady Beetles and stinging wasps are also conveniently dispatched without the smell and risk.

Attracting and trapping insects to dehydrate them is another alternative for larger areas or quieter operation. Indoor options attract with light, with mixed results on biting insects that prefer your body heat, 'flavour', and exhaled carbon dioxide.
Outdoor-only options can be propane powered combining combustion (heat & CO2) and Octenol as attractants.
Once within range or either model, they are drawn in by fan pressure and trapped in a filter basket for later disposal.

Should all these defenses fail and you're still bitten, antihistamine medications are a well-known option to set your mind and swelling at ease!
